Earthquake: FISU offers warmest sympathy to Turkish National University Sports Federation and all the people affected

FISU 9 February 2023

Monday’s magnitude 7.8 devastating earthquake has killed more than 30,000 people in Southern Türkiye and Syria, a number which unfortunately is still growing.

FISU Acting President Leonz Eder and Secretary General/CEO Éric Saintrond have written to the Turkish National University Sports Federation, expressing FISU’s deepest sadness and warmest sympathy to the Federation and all the people whose lives and livelihoods have been affected by the disaster.

“We truly hope that none of your relatives or friends has been affected and that the concerned people will find the strength to move on in this difficult time,” the letter concludes.

Through its National University Sports Federation, Türkiye has organised multiple FISU events, including the 23rd Summer Universiade in Izmir (2005) and the 25th Winter Universiade in Erzurum (2011), and more recently, the FISU University World Cups Combat Sports and 3×3 Basketball in Samsun and Istanbul respectively (2022).
