The FASU Board
ENTEBBE – Expectations were high as members of the FASU Executive Board converged in the city of Entebbe in Uganda for an executive committee meeting for the year 2012.
The program, which ran from Friday 31st August to Monday 3rd September 2012, was expected to address questions surrounding the 6th FASU Games which were supposed to be hosted by Senegal in September 2012, before Senegal pulled out at a late stage prompting a search for a new host to salvage the games. Other issues discussed included; the introduction of individual championships to the FASU calendar with members ratifying the Cross Country, Rugby and Judo as the 1st phase of championships; review of the various projects that have taken place since February 2012 and ratification of the projects and programs for 2012 and 2013; Completion of the re-organization process of the West African Zone of FASU which is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year; among other matters. It is hoped that this diversification in the FASU program will give more opportunities to students to experience what university sports has to offer and will be stepping stone to competitively participate at FISU and other International engagements.
The hotel, Lake Victoria Entebbe, which was the venue for the meeting, is one of the venues for the 2014 World University Cross Country Championship. This was therefore a great opportunity for the FASU Executive Board to have an input in the preparations of the World University Cross Country Championship by evaluating the hotel.
TISAN saves 2012 All Africa University Games
The University of Namibia
The meeting of the FASU Executive Board held from 31st August to 3rd September 2012 in Entebbe, Uganda was expected to provide direction on the matters of the 6th All Africa University Games which were scheduled to take place this September in Dakar, Senegal, but were postponed to December due to a late communication by Senegal of its inability to host the games this year. True to that, there is good news from the Uganda meeting.
CUCSA President Benjamin NaobebWith a series of interactions and engagements of alternative host countries for these games including Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Namibia, the Executive Board meeting received good news of Namibia’s willingness and readiness to salvage the games and keep the pride of Africa University Sports high. The news was delivered by the President of CUCSA (Confederation of University and College Sports Association) Zone 6, Mr. Benjamin Naobeb on behalf of TISAN (Tertiary Institutes Sports Associations of Namibia). He informed the executive board that following their successful hosting of the 16th CUCSA Zone 6 Games in July 2012, the leadership in Namibia was willing and ready to work hand in hand with FASU to ensure that the games are held this year.
The Executive Board has therefore shifted all focus on ensuring that Namibia makes all necessary arrangements to host these games expected to run from 15th to 22ndDecember 2012 at the University of Namibia in Windhoek, Namibia.
In his words, the President of FASU, Dr. Michael Malumbete RALETHE thanked Namibia for considering taking on the games and appreciated the efforts of all other countries like Uganda and Kenya who had earlier shown interest in hosting these games. He encouraged all member countries of FASU to ensure that they participate in the games.
