Asian champions crowned at KELME 2018 AUSF Football Cup

A perfect ending for Thai teams, bright future for China

JINJIANG, CHINA – After 12 days of intense competition, the men’s and women’s champions were crowned at the Kelme 2018 AUSF Football Cup.

The men’s final between Thailand’s Bangkok Thonburi University (BTU) and Korea’s Myongji University (MJU) was a keenly contested one. At the end of 90 minutes, the score was locked at 2-2, eventually sending the title clash into a penalty shootout.

It was the Thai team from BTU that emerged victorious, winning 6-5 in penalty kicks to be crowned the 2018 AUSF Football Cup champions. It was indeed a match befitting a final and was a treat for the 17,000-capacity crowd.

The women’s final did not go down to the wire like the men’s, but it was a very closely fought match as well. College of Asian Scholars (CAS) from Thailand beat Donghua University (DHU) from China 1-0, as no.13 Orapin Waenngoen scored the lone goal of the match in the 23rd minute.

Thailand returned home as the big winners from the tournament, claiming both the men’s and women’s trophies. Host China also did well, winning 3rd place among the men and finishing runners-up in the women’s competition. The top two university teams in the men’s category and the top university team in the women’s category have now qualified for the inaugural edition of the FISU University World Cup – Football, in 2019.

After the match, the coach of the CAS team said her team will now look forward to the first-ever University World Cup. Jinjiang will continue to host the AUSF Football Cup biennially until 2024, and the city is also slated to be the host of the FISU University World Cup - Football for its first four editions.
