Mind sports begin in Brazil with WUC Chess

ARACAJU — Close on the heels of a successful Wrestling Championship, another World University Championship is being hosted in Brazil - this time, it is chess, in the city of Aracaju. Aracaju is the capital of the state of Sergipe on Brazil’s northeast coast and although it is known for its beaches, much of the exciting action this week will be taking place indoors. In fact, in the minds of some of the most talented student chess players in the world.

The Opening Ceremony took place at the Praia Hotel on 12 September, and competition will be on till 18 September. The Ceremony began with a traditional presentation from the participating countries - Argentina, China, Czech Republic, France, India, Peru, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and the host country Brazil.

Ricardo Japiassu was responsible for taking the athlete's oath, which included commitment to doping-free and drug-free sports, with a spirit of friendship, fair play and sporting behaviour.

After the Brazilian anthem was played, the dignitaries present including CBDU President Luciano Cabral, Secretary of State for Sport Antonio Hora Filho, and FISU Executive Committee member Anthony Davis emphasised the importance of chess at university level and praised the values that all chess players develop, such as patience and responsibility.
