2010 OWG Champion and former WU Champion Visits FISU HQ

Biathlon 4 March 2010

Olga proudly shows her medals together with husband Milan and son Alexander

The FISU Headquarters in Brussels welcomed Olympic Champion Olga Zaitseva today March 4th, when she accompanied her husband FISU Director for the Winter Universiade Milan Augustin to the office today. Olga won a silver medal in the women’s biathlon mass start at the recent Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada and became Olympic Champion with the Russian women’s relay team. With winning this gold, the Russian team prolonged its Olympic title as it won also gold at the previous OWG in Torino, Italy in 2006. Olga was a member of that team as well.

Asking her to compare both competitions, Olga said Torino was tougher physically as she had been ill prior to the competition. ‘In Vancouver however, it was tougher psychologically’, Olga explained. ‘The disappointing results of the Russian athletes where affecting morale. So there was a lot of pressure on our shoulders. But in the end we delivered.’ The season is far from over yet for Olga. She will travel to Sweden and Norway for the IBU World Cup in the next weeks.

Olga was quite successful at the Winter Universiade as well. With a silver in Muju-Chonju, Korea (1997) and a gold, silver and bronze in Zakopane, Poland (2001) she mounted the Winter Universiade medal podium four times. – C. Pierre, FISU Press Officer
