Uganda NUSF further develops Basketball on Campus

FISU 4 October 2017

UGANDA – After a successful participation in the 3×3 FISU Basketball competitions, the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) made known its intent to develop basketball in the universities and also set a pace for the rest of Africa with its inaugural University Floodlights Basketball competition holding at Makerere University Main Grounds court from the 30 September to 11 November, 2017.

Inauguration of the competition

This competition is the first of its kind in Uganda and will have 10 institutions compete in both the men and women’s categories with Makerere University, Ndejje, Nkumba, UCU, Kyambogo, Cavendish University, IUEA, KIU, Kampala University and Uganda Martyrs.

This competition is also bringing together university students and their better experienced counterparts in the national basketball league to compete in a one of a kind event. The last time university sides competitively played outside of the National Basketball League setting was in 2015 during the Zuku University Basketball League. Since then, only universities playing in FUBA leagues as UCU, Ndejje and the likes have had an opportunities to face off competitively.

Court action

“We are happy to have moved one more step in sport. We have a new flagship name and we hope the event will elevate the game of basketball,” Peninnah Kabenge, President of the association commented on the inauguration.
