FISU 1st Vice President at the FIBA 3×3 All Stars in Doha

DOHA – After the successful 1st edition of the FISU 3×3 Basketball World University League in Xiamen, China, FISU was invited to participate at the FIBA 3×3 All Stars in Doha, Qatar, with the winning men’s team of Montréal UQAM from Canada. At the season-ending event of 3×3 basketball and award ceremony which was held for the first time to honor the accomplishments of the best players, federations and promoters in 3×3 basketball FISU was represented by its 1st Vice-President Leonz Eder. The event which rewards the top players in the FIBA 3×3 Individual World Ranking from all around the world was held under the patronage of the host, HE Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, member of the ruling family of Qatar and President of the Qatar Basketball Federation.

 

The FIBA 3×3 All Stars sees six teams starring the:

#1 player in Europe: Jasmin Hercegovac and his Ljubljana team (SLO)

#1 player in the Americas: Michael Linklater and his Saskatoon team (CAN)

#1 player in Qatar: Yaseen Musa and his Doha team (QAT)

#1 player in the rest of the world: Tomoya Ochiai and his Tokyo team (JAP)

# 1 team at the FIBA 3×3 World Tour: Novi Sad Al Wahda (UAE)

The University Team from UQAM Montréal performed very well but lost the two games in the pool B against Doha 11:17 and against semi-finalist Ljubljana 11:19. The players, arriving in Doha just after exams at the University, were very happy with their performances. “Having been invited to such a great tournament after our victory in Xiamen was a great experience,” the Coach said. “We hope to be back next year at the WUC 3×3 in Xiamen again.” In the final game Novi Sad Al Wahda (UAE) won against Saskatoon (CAN) 21:14. The price money and appearance fee reached a grand total of 80,000 USD.

Former FIBA President and now Honorary President of FIBA, the French Yvan Mainini, was very pleased with the presence of the University team from Montréal. “The tournament in Xiamen and the invitation to the winner to participate here in Doha was a good start of our cooperation with FISU,” Mainini stated. “We are ready to further develop the collaboration with FISU.” The President of the Qatar Basketball Federation and host of the 3×3 All Stars Doha 2015, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, was impressed by the performance of the student team. “They really played very well and forced their professional opponents to give their best”, he said.
