The International University Sports Federation (FISU) had the pleasure of welcoming a high-level delegation from the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) to its headquarters in Lausanne for an official meeting and institutional visit.

The Chinese delegation, led by Prof. Shen Haitao, Vice President of ECUST, included key representatives from both academic and administrative leadership: Prof. Peng Delei, Dean of the Law School; Prof. Ye Xinming, Dean of the School of Sports Engineering; Prof. Lian Cheng, Vice Dean of the School of Chemistry; Mr. Zheng Dong, Deputy Director of the Student Affairs Office; and Ms. Feng Aiai, International Affairs Office.

During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially signed by ECUST Vice President Shen Haitao, in the presence of FISU Deputy Secretary General Fernando Parente. The MoU had been prepared and endorsed by FISU President Leonz Eder and Secretary General and CEO Matthias Remund.

The MoU lays the foundation for a strong institutional partnership centred on future collaboration in the development of sport and education. It focuses on several strategic areas, including academic and sport-related research, student wellbeing and sustainability, as well as active participation in FISU programmes and global events.

ECUST also formally expressed its intention to join the FISU Healthy Campus Programme in the near future. The university’s commitment to health and well-being is as strong as its investment in elite sport, reflecting a holistic approach to student development that embraces both high-performance excellence and sport for all. This alignment with FISU’s values strengthens the foundation for long-term cooperation and shared impact.

ECUST is internationally recognised for its excellence in table tennis. At the Chengdu 2023 FISU World University Games, they swept all seven gold medals, as well as three silver and three bronze.

East China University of Science and Technology’s students are known for their excellent results in table tennis. It was the case in Chengdu (with Prof. Shen Haitao third from the right in the picture) and also in Rhine-Ruhr 2025.

Two years later, they also achieved remarkable results at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, with two gold medals, three silver, and two bronze medals. Notably, the entire Chinese delegation in table tennis was composed of ECUST students, a testament to the university’s elite sport development programme.

With a strong reputation across China, ECUST is considered a national reference in university sport, particularly through its School of Sports Engineering, one of the most advanced in the country. The school’s curriculum covers areas such as coaching, economics, health sciences, and in sport materials.

The university’s leadership expressed a clear commitment to deepening its engagement in university sport both nationally and internationally, and to strengthening collaboration with FISU in the years ahead.

This agreement is a consolidation in the partnership between FISU and Chinese higher education and university sports institutions, further expanding the global network of institutions contributing to the development of university sport.
