Happy International Day of University Sport from all over the world!

19 September 2025

The 20 September is IDUS! But the whole FISU Family makes sure to put university sport at the center of everything we do all year round. Today let’s celebrate sport, education and culture and have fun together even if we are far away!

Happy International Day of University Sport from Matthias Remund, Secretary General and CEO of the International University Sport Federation, from all of us at FISU headquarters in Lausanne, but also from our colleagues on mission at the Dalian 2025 FISU University World Cup Football or elsewhere preparing future events.

It might not be 20 September yet where you are, but it is already the International Day of University Sport somewhere in the world and the celebrations are starting in New Zealand and Australia. They will carry on over many hours in many countries, as students and all other members of the university sport community organise special events today.

Nine years of IDUS

In 2016, FISU with the support of UNESCO claimed the 20 September as IDUS, the International Day of University Sport. The date was chosen eight years ago, because it is the date of the opening of the very first Student World Championships in 1924. For nine years now, the internationally-recognised day highlights the importance of linking universities and their local communities together through sport, physical activity and healthy living.

Celebrate in many languages

FISU Student Ambassadors often lead the organisation of IDUS in their respective countries. A few of them will be sending you their wishes in their native languages later on on Instagram. Will you be able to guess where they are from? The flags should help…

The FISU Student Committee is also organising a roundtable on 24 September to continue celebrations. Find more here.

Log on to social media (InstagramFacebookLinkedIn and X), where all the fun is happening. Don’t forget to add the #LetsIDUS to all your publications!

If the date had skipped your mind, it is not too late to join the celebrations. You can find tips, logos and other resources here. And take a look at what people did previously.
