“The Games reflect how sport can evolve by being more inclusive and more sustainable”

9 July 2025
Domitila Barros takes us on a tour of values that matter a lot to the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games.

Meet Rhine-Ruhr 2025 Ambassador Domitila Barros, an ex-miss Germany who is now a sustainability role model and content creator.

Brazilian born Domitila Barros now lives in Germany. She is a popular content creator and RR 2025 Ambassador.

With her strong and beautiful Brazilian accent, Domitila Barros takes us on a journey towards a more inclusive and sustainable future, which is just around the corner. The author, speaker and sustainability awardee, who has 1,2 million followers on Instagram, now lives in Germany. A country that crowned her Miss Germany in 2022.

Thanks to her commitment and influence, she received the Most Influential Person on Social Media award in the Sustainability category during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. No wonder the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games’ organising committee chose her as her sustainability ambassador: she is the perfect person to speak about these vital issues to the young generations.

Germany will share their industrial heritage with participants from all over the world.
Social sustainability and inclusion are also really important.
Basketball will be played at Messe Essen, while the 3×3 and ex3 wheelchair basketball will take place at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum.
No new venue was built for the Rhine-Ruhr R2025 FISU World University Games.

As she walks around the amazing Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum on her way to meeting Mirjam Scheffler, the RR2025 FIS Games’ Colunteers Manager and Helen Gampper, the Legacy and Sustainability Manager, Domitila Barros explains why the FISU World University Games are more that a multisports competition.

A new way of thinking about sport

“The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games are a statement, a new way of thinking about sport: more inclusive, more sustainable and connected to people and places”, she explains with a large smile. “The Games will take place across six cities and what is remarkable is that no venue was built for this event: instead we are breathing new life into existing spaces, cutting emission, reducing waste and respecting the environment.”

A more inclusive sporting experience

She of course also tells her audience about the fact that para-sport is included in the programme and that the 3×3 wheelchair basketball student-athletes will compete on the same court and on the same day as their 3×3 basketball teammates. “This is a simple but powerful step towards a more inclusive sporting experience”.

Sustainability goes a lot further than “only” environmental sustainability. It’s social aspect is also very important when such a big event is organised in people’s neighbourhoods. “Volunteers, students and local residents all play a role in making these Games happen”, reminds Domitila Barros. “Their involvement adds something essential: a sense of connection and shared purpose.”

Her conclusion is full of hope for the future, where todays student-athletes could lead change. “The Games reflect how sport can evolve by being more inclusive and more sustainable”.
