It has been a busy week in Brazilian university sport. The Best of the Year Awards gala was held on Wednesday the 24th of March, after not being held in 2021 due to the pandemic. For athletes, partners, State University Federations, and Higher Education Institutions that were with CBDU in 2021, it was a great celebration of university sport in Brazil. The event provided an opportunity to recognise those who contributed to the promotion of university sport during the difficulties of the last two years.

Athletes of the year were among those honoured at the gala. Swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira, from UNIP/SP, was named female athlete of the year, while high jumper Thiago Julio Souza Alfano Moura from UNG/SP was named the top male. Rebeca Vitória de Oliveira, who competes in taekwondo and is from ISEMG/MG, won the title of Craque da Galera.

Earlier in the week prior to the gala, the CBDU Volunteer Academy began in Brasilia. The academy, which began on Monday the 21st, not only provides specialised training for activities carried out as volunteers, but it also enables participants the opportunity to discuss and exchange experiences whileCBDU Volunteer Academy tug of warParticipants at CBDU Volunteer Academy (photo credit: CBDU/Claudio Braga) promoting the values of volunteering. They equally come away with additional professional contacts, the development of skills, and potentially a recognition of new interests. The only requirement for participation is to be over the age of 18.

“The first day of the Volunteer Academy was awesome. We had the participation of 73 people, from several states of Brazil, even the Federal District. Everyone made a very nice exchange of knowledge, cultural as well, it was a self-knowledge for all the participants; because they are interacting and having fun”, highlights CBDU Volunteer Coordinator Vanessa Messina.

The academy took place over five days and included lectures on first aid, communication and social media, the CBDU, and offered a tour of Brasilia to see some of the main tourist sites.
