UCLA Athletics Director Dan Guerrero elected to steer US International University Sport

18 May 2020

The United States International University Sports Federation (USIUSF) has elected UCLA Athletics Director Dan Guerrero as incoming President effective July 1, for the period 2020-2024. Guerrero, who is set to retire from UCLA on June 30th, has been involved with the Federation since 2015, and formerly served as vice president.

Guerrero’s connections to the World University Games date back many years when, as a UCLA undergraduate student he was selected to play on a U.S. baseball team that toured Italy and played in the 1970 Summer World University Games in Torino.

He went on to play four seasons of Major League Baseball in the Italian leagues (Serie A) from 1974 to 1977. A strong proponent of the value of global and cross-cultural engagement, Guerrero has consistently supported the World University Games and other international opportunities for student-athletes.

“Dan Guerrero is a terrific choice for the next president of USIUSF. His experience as a student-athlete and administrator on the international stage will bring great insight and perspective to the work of USIUSF,” said NCAA President Dr. Mark Emmert. “I am thrilled to see him continuing to stay involved in sports after his retirement from UCLA and look forward to the new opportunities that our student-athletes can achieve under his leadership.”

A distinguished administrator, Guerrero was the first athletics director at the NCAA Division I level to earn three NACDA Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year awards. In 2017, he was honored by the National Football Foundation with the John L. Toner Award. Nationally, he has extensive experience in committee work at both the NCAA and conference level. As the Chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee in 2009-10, he was involved with the negotiation of the 14-year, $10.8 billion, NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament television package.

“The Federation will flourish under Dan’s leadership; his influence and connections will create many new opportunities for U.S. student-athletes.” said FISU Executive Committee Member and USIUSF Secretary General Delise O’Meally. “He is a thoughtful, transformational leader, deeply committed to USIUSF and the FISU mission.”
