International Day of University Sport connects students around the world

20 September 2018

Good reason to get moving, get active!

LAUSANNE — Hundreds and thousands of university students, institutions, cities and people came together in celebrating the International Day of University Sport on 20 September 2018, making the 3rd edition of IDUS a resounding success.

Messages and photos from around the world were shared on social media, connecting people and showcasing activities that got citizens moving.

The FISU headquarters in Lausanne buzzed with activity too, as renowned Swiss athletes Zoé Cheli and Augustin Maillefer dropped in to have a chat about university sport and IDUS.

Ski Cross star Zoé said, “It’s a really cool event for the students, especially to try out some new sport that they can then practice on the campus afterwards.”

Two-time Olympian, rower Augustin agreed wholeheartedly. “I study sports science, so I know how important physical activity is. And sports is so much fun anyway, so I think it’s a great event. Have fun!” was his message to all the students out there, celebrating IDUS in their own way.

Proclaimed by UNESCO in 2015, IDUS is FISU’s unique platform for the global exchange of ideas and development through university sport.

It is all part of FISU’s endeavour to create stronger sporting cultures in universities and encourage physical activity. Taking this core message forward is FISU’s ambitious initiative ‘Healthy Campus’, which is set for a launch in 2019.

“FISU has to take care of the health of all those students who do not participate in competitive sports also,” said FISU Secretary General & CEO, Eric Saintrond.

“It is a fact that a huge number of students are inactive or not active enough,” he explained.

It is for this reason that FISU is launching the Healthy Campus project, as it will provide opportunities to all students to participate in recreational sport and physical activity. The universities will be provided the tools through which they will implement and manage this project.”
