One day after FISU President Oleg Matytsin spoke at his alma mater, the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism, the higher institution celebrated its 100th anniversary on Tuesday. Founded shortly after the socialist revolution, the university shortly became Russia’s largest higher education institution in the field of physical culture and sports – a distinction it still holds today.
Also known under its historical name of SCOLIPE (State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Education), the university has gained fame thanks to many generations of its illustrious alumni, a growing ranks that include more than 170 Olympic European and world champions. World-known figures such as Lev Yashin, Irina Rodnina, Valeriy Kharlamov, Alexander Ovechkin and many others were among the graduates of the university. In total, SCOLIPE has trained more than 50,000 people, including more than 4,000 foreign graduates from 115 countries.
On Monday, 28 May 2018, a solemn meeting of the university’s Scientific council was held where FISU President Oleg Matytsin took the floor to congratulate his alma mater, which had played a crucial part in his professional career. After graduation, Mr. Matytsin worked for many years at the university – first as a lecturer, then dean, rector and finally president, a position he held until his election for FISU’s top office.
Addressing the faculty of the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism and its rector, Ms Tamara Mikhailova, President Matytsin thanked the university for its contribution to the development of university sports and presented a diploma to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this renowned sports institution.
