7 September 2016

LISBOA – FADU, the Portuguese Federation of University Sports, recently sponsored the creation of the University Sports Federation in Sao Tomé and Principe (FDU-STP). The newly created federation was inspired by the organizational structure of FADU Portugal.

The president of FADU, Daniel Monteiro, considers that this type of availability by the federation is “extremely important, even more in the context of the Lusophone community where university sport has a huge potential to take over as a cooperative motor relationship between communities of the CPLP member countries”.

Bruno Barracosa, member of the executive committee of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and former president of FADU, was present at the founding General Assembly in order to assist the creation of the federation, which uses the model management of FADU.

The FADU is one of the few National University Sports Federations with an organizational structure led by students. The Portuguese Federation of University Sports participated in the creation of the Federation statutes of São Tomé and advised the realization of the founding General Assembly.

The representative of FADU present in the General Assembly of the FDU-STP, Bruno Barracosa, was satisfied by the “dedication and commitment to a group of young students of São Tomé, who proposed to embrace the challenge of creating this structure and promotion of sports interests to São Tomé students “.

The FDU-STP was architected by five young students from three different universities in the country and the governing body was elected with 32 votes in favor and 3 abstentions. Telmy Dende, elected President of the structure, thanks to immediate availability of FADU, which “served as inspiration for us, because of its organizational structure”.

Telmy Dende also says that the Portuguese federation “had a crucial importance in the creation of FDU-STP”.

The foundation of the University Sports Federation of São Tomé and Principe was attended by the representative of the Minister of Sport and Youth, the Rector of the University of São Tomé and Principe and officials of the Sports Institute and the Youth Institute.
