‘Synathlon’: Opening of Construction Site on UNIL Campus

11 January 2016

LAUSANNE – In accordance with the schedule announced last year, the construction works of the ‘Synathlon’ building on the Dorigny campus will start on 18 January. Estimated at 27 million Swiss francs, the new centre will house four entities specialised in promotion, teaching and research in the field of international sport. The construction works are expected to last two years.

The ‘Synathlon’ project embodies the policy of hosting international sports federations and organisations, as well as international sports events and congresses that the Canton of Vaud and the City of Lausanne have been leading together for fifteen years. Provided by the State on the Dorigny campus, the plot of 6,000 m² is located in front of the sports facilities between la route du Lac (Lake Road) and the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law (ISDC).
On these grounds, the future building ‘Synathlon’ will include four entities with complementary activities forming a coherent whole: i.e. the Cluster Secretariat of International Sport (CSI), the Canton, the City, the Confederation and the IOC are about to create; the Institute of Sports Science of the University of Lausanne (ISSUL), in a phase of strong development; the International University Sports Federation (FISU), bringing all its activities to Lausanne, and the International Academy for Sports Science and Technology (AISTS), which offices are currently located at the Science Park Ecublens.

The four organizations will occupy partitioned workspaces, offices and small meeting rooms, consisting of five levels in a peripheral ring around a central core of collective spaces wide open on each other. This common part includes an auditorium with 200 seats, four classrooms for seminars and a cafeteria. Initiated by the State Council in 2012 and studied last summer, the project is estimated at 26.7 million, including 15.7 million at the expense of the State of Vaud.

The construction site will start on 18 January for the installation work and land clearing phase.
