GWANGJU – How to make students to be truly passionate about their studies? Let them do something what is usually forbidden in all other universities. FAU Busan is the first German University in Korea that opened a campus branch in this country. It offers masters’ degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering and each of the modules have practical units in the laboratories.
So what makes studying at this university so special? One of the practical units for Biosciences is brewing their own German beer, as beer is one of the oldest biotechnology products.
The goal for the students is to use their theoretical knowledge they gained and apply it in a real life solution – and at the end, they have a product they created themselves. They can sample it, take quality control, measure the alcohol content, basically go through the whole process which takes six weeks.
“The German Embassy in Korea sometimes asks us to bring the beer that students brewed. It’s got a unique taste,” says professor Lindenberger. The Campus also likes to use this beer for promotional events, such as the German Delegation reception which was held on the occasion of the 28th Summer Universiade in Gwangju. It aroused a great interest and it became a subject of many conversations that gave the reception a real German touch.
