Celebration of the 239th Independence Day of America in Gwangju

GWANGJU – July 4th marks the Independence Day of the United States of America. On this day a federal holiday is observed in the US since 1941, but the tradition of its celebration goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On this day, the Continental Congress approved the revolutionary document – the Declaration of Independence. Yesterday evening, a party was thrown by the Deputy Head of Delegation, Mr. Gary Cunningham, at Prado Hotel to celebrate the 239th Independence Day of America during the 28th Summer Universiade, Gwangju.

The invites only reception was attended by nearly 500 people including Head of Delegations of various countries, members of the Local Organizing Committee and some prominent members of FISU, including FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien, who was very thrilled to be a part of the celebration. He said “it was nice to see representatives of various countries, gathered together to celebrate the Independence Day of America.” 

The official toast was given by Mr. Cunningham, who has lead his delegation for 20 times, including both at Winter and Summer Universiades. He said “we wanted to host a party for all the delegations and important people and it is the third time we have done it.” He said that in America, on the 4th of July, this day is marked with speeches, marches, public readings of the declaration, artillery salutes or fireworks and family time. Mr. Cunningham said that he and his team were happy to host an evening, “It is a moment of happiness and pride for me to see people from so many countries celebrating America’s 239th Independence Day and indeed America is a home to people from various countries and cultures.”
