Looking Back at 2014: Another Successful WUC Year!

6 January 2015

LAUSANNE – With FISU major sporting events in 2015 coming up, we realise another FISU World University Championships season has just come to an end. Indeed, in 2014, 28 FISU World University Championships took place from March to December, covering 144 competition days. Participants from no less than 92 countries attended these events, reaching a new record of 6,447 participants – of which 4,840 athletes represented a total of 538 delegations.

The year was also special as we bid farewell to Taekwondo after 13 seasons on the WUC sports programme and wish the sport good luck as it will join the Summer Universiade compulsory sports programme. We also welcomed American Football for the first time.

The FISU WUC Department will now continue the preparation of the 2016 season which will feature a record of 34 (!) FISU World University Championships with inaugural editions of Sambo, Ski Orienteering and Sport Climbing. In 2016, FISU will also return to countries that have not hosted FISU events for some time, notably Mexico, USA, Japan, Estonia and Cyprus.

Additionally, the FISU WUC Department will continue to monitor the 2018 WUC bidding procedure currently ongoing until the end of September 2015.
