MUKONO – The East African University Games have been officially opened yesterday, 17 December 2014 at the Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono. 44 of the 56 expected universities from 5 countries and participating in 18 sports disciplines turned up at the UCU main sports grounds for the opening ceremony that was presided over by the Chancellor of UCU, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Starnely Ntangali, who also doubles as the Arch. Bishop of the Church of Uganda.

Great entertainment from different groups including students and a marching pass of the participating teams preceded speeches from different dignitaries and guests. LOC President Mrs. Anny Katabaazi opened the games. The EAUSF President, Mr. Cyriaco Kabagambe, welcomed all teams and encouraged them to enjoy the games. The Vice Chancellor UCU, Rev. Can. Dr. John Ssenyonyi welcomed all the participants and promised them security and hospitality. He also noted that UCU was the 1st private university to host the regional games. The FASU President, Dr. Malumbete Ralethe thanked all teams sparing time and resources to promote University Sports, and also appreciated the LOC for the great organization.
After the oaths by the players & officials and declaring the games open, senior guests held a one lap walking race which was won by the Vice Chancellor of Uganda Christian University. Competition started immediately after at the venues all over the university campus.
