ULGII CITY – ‘The Regional Universiade Games’ are the National University Sports Games between the students from the Mongolian local vocational universities and colleges. Since 1997, the event has been organized traditionally every year among western regional students. The 17th edition of these games were hosted in Ulgii city, Bayan-Ulgii province in Mongolia, from 25 to 29 September, 2014. The city hosted the games previously in 2003. The Regional Universiade Games were co-hosted by the Mongolian Student Sports Federation, the Governor’s office of Bayan-Ulgii and Khovd University in the Bayan-Ulgii province.
Over 250 student-athletes and representatives from the National University of Mongolia in the Zavkhan province, the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences in Gobi-Altai province, the Labor institute in Uvs province, the “Khovd” University in Khovd province and the “Khovd” University in Bayan-Ulgii province have participated in these regional games.
The event was organized in 5 sports disciplines, i.e. basketball (male and female), chess (male and female), national wrestling, table tennis (male and female) and woodball (male and female), while ‘Toguz kumalak’, a popular board game in Central Asia, was presented as well. The art festival consisted of songs, dance and folk art along with the election of the regional ‘Student Miss’. In addition, regional students presented their inspiring speeches on ‘University Sport’ in a conference, which is one of the educational events to spread the university sports spirit in all parts of Mongolia, initiated by the Mongolian Student Sports Federation.

According to the overall result, the Khovd University team ended victorious (score 206), the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences in Gobi-Altai province became runner-up (score 195) while host Khovd University settled for 3rd place (score 148).
The top 3 university teams were awarded with medals of the Regional University Games, diploma, reward and trophy which were presented by Mr. Jargalsaikhan D., Secretary General of NUSF Mongolia; Mr. Darmen Kh., the Governor of Bayan-Ulgii province; Mr. Sanatbek N., the Vice Governor of Bayan-Ulgii province; Mr. Khainar Kh., Chairman of the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism in Bayan-Ulgii province; Mr. Jigjid B., the representative of Mongolian Students Union and other delegations from the Governor’s office and local universities.
The next edition will be hosted by the National University of Mongolia in the Zavkhan province while the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences in the Gobi-Altai province will host the 19th Regional Universiade Games in 2016.
