YAKUTSK – After the fights of the first competition day at the 6th World University Boxing Championship some of the teams are already counting their losses. Let’s have a look at the most interesting fights of 10 September.
In the 52 kg weight category Nurlan Ashaev (MGL) fought Anton Nakhankov (BLR). The representative of Mongolia was smaller than the Belarussian boxer but this advantage in height could not help Nakhankov to win. The Mongolian boxer moved faster and delivered more punches. In the third round Ashaev caught Nakhanhov in the corner and hit him with a lot of clear shots. So, the victory of the Mongolian representative was obvious.

The next fight was between Amirsan Nebiev (RUS) and Marcus Gevie (FRA). It was an equal bout. Nebiev tried to make more movements in the center of the ring while Gevie answered with counterattacks. Nebiev was swinging like a pendulum in the third round after he had suffered a cut eyebrow. However, the French boxer dominated the fight which resulted in a first loss for the host team.
At the end of the second day, the audience witnessed the first heavyweight fights (81 kg). When Otabek Abdurashidov (UZB) and Tursynbay Kulakhmet (KAZ) entered the ring they were greeted with applause. Abdurashidov became too involved into attacking and missed a serious blow aiming his chin. In the middle of the second round Kulakhmet took the initiative and landed some right-sided blows on his opponent. And soon everyone realized that he had become the Asian junior champion for a reason. The Kazakh finally overpowered his adversary.
During the twelfth fight there was a very loud support from the Korean team for their boxer Yonghyun Yu. But his opponent Imam Hataev from Russia hardly paid any attention to it. He continued to score points while his rival answered him by a strong body blow from the bottom. But in the end Yu missed more punches and was knocked out by Hataev in the second round.

Today, the audience will be able to witness women’s boxing which is on the sports programme for the first time in the history of the FISU World University Boxing Championship.
“This is my first time in Yakutsk but I heard about the successful International Sports Games ‘Children of Asia’ and that Yakutsk often hosts Russian championships in different kind of sports”, FISU Treasurer Bayasgalan Danzandorj (MGL) commented. “The World University Championship programme of FISU has been growing steadily. Every two years, FISU now organizes more than 30 single sport events in different kind of sports.”
