Opening speeches
YAKUTSK – The opening ceremonies of big events always are worth watching in Yakutia. This was also true for the opening of the 6th World University Boxing Championship.
The delegation of Belarus marched in first followed by Hungary, Kazakhstan, Korea and others. But it was not until the delegation of Moldova entered that the audience saw the first-ever female participant of this WUC Boxing event. Indeed, this 6th edition of the FISU Boxing Championship will also be the inaugural event for women’s boxing within the FISU sports programme, a truly historic event! Traditionally, the host delegation closed the Marching Pass.
Cultural programme
The cultural programme depicted Muruydana and Djulustan, two heroes of the Yakut epos, wearing white boxing gloves. They demonstrated several punches. Boys and girls in national clothes showed how in ancient times the ancestors of the Yakutia people had worked the land.
Oleg Matytsin, FISU 1st Vice-President and President of the Russian Students Sports Union, welcomed the participants. “Welcome in the hospitable land of Olonkho! I am very grateful to the government of Yakutia, the Boxing Federation of Russia and for everyone who helped in organizing this event. Yakut people have a lot of traditions including sports. I know that the guests of previous events like the ‘Children of Asia’ Games, Russian championships in different sports and international tournaments cherish their stay here. During the Universiade in Kazan, and now, during this boxing championship we can see how Russia supports student sports. I am sure that the future is to the youth!”
First fights
Egor Borisov, Head of Sakha Republic, also took the floor. “I thank FISU for choosing Yakutsk as host city for the 6th World University Boxing Championship. This is a continuation of good traditions because in the past a great number of high leveled events were staged in Yakutia. Sport here has a very high esteem and we always try to prove that our republic can host competitions in all kinds of sports. I wish this championship to become a real celebration of sports. The 6th World University Boxing Championship is now opened!” And with these last words Egor Borisov pushed a button which made a signal to start the first fights.
