22nd WUC Handball: update

Spain vs Japan

GUIMARES – Today was the day of serious competition! The 22nd World University Handball Championship kicked with the first games of the group stage, in female and male competition.At Inatel Sports Hall, in the female group A, Russia won, comfortably, against Japan by 33-24. The Russian team was always at the front and they have managed this advantage right until the end of the game.

In another match of the same group, the home team debuted in a WUC Handball with a victory against Mexico by 24-17. The first few minutes were balanced, but after minute 10, Portugal went to the lead, keeping it until the break. Thereafter, the Portuguese efficacy combined with more than 10 consecutive defenses of the goalkeeper Andreia Costa allowed Portugal to reach 22-15.

The first game of Group B resulted in the first tie of the championship (23-23) between Brazil and Spain. It was a very emotional game. Spain was ahead on the scoreboard most part of the time, but Brazil managed to reach the draw, benefiting from several good defenses of their keeper. The second half was more disputed with the keepers assuming the most important role in the game.
