
Prof. Antonio Cunha, Rector of the Guimares UniversityGUIMARES – The 22nd World University Handball Championship kicked yesterday in Guimarães, with the Opening Ceremony at Largo da Oliveira, full of participants and with hundreds of people who did not want to miss the opening of this major international sport event.
It was a full color square where participants from around the world were present and welcomed for this 22nd World University Handball Championship 2014.
The ceremony opened with the singing of the Portugal anthem, during which the national flag was hoisted. This was followed by the parade of 15 delegations participating in the competition, with Portugal closing the procession as the host team of the event.
The Rector, Prof. Antonio Cunha was officially invited by Mr. Kemal Tamer, FISU Executive Committee member to open the event and also to welcome all participants. Prof. Cunha wished everyone “success, enthusiasm and fair play.”
The raising of the FISU flag, accompanied by the respective anthem, officially opened the tournament that runs until Sunday, August 10.
Athletes and referees oaths came at the end to close the formal part. The participants were then invited to enjoy performances of the acrobatic gymnastics Acro Club da Maia and percussion group Bomboémia.
