PODGORICA – The Students Sports Association of Montenegro (SSAM), member of FISU since 2007,
has launched a project entitled “Game Set Move and Play” to promote the participation of women in sports activities.
SSAM conducted some research and found that female students only account for 5% of the participants in university sports events in Montenegro. Women appear to be less motivated to compete and would rather take part in recreational activities that can improve their general well-being for example.
Therefore, SSAM started to offer in June non-competitive sports activities through “motivation weekends” involving training in fitness, weight lifting, dance and training in nature, in which 150 female students participated. Hiking, biking and canyoning will be offered in September, while tennis, basketball, volleyball and badminton weekends will take place in October. All these activities will be followed by a public awareness campaign on healthy lifestyle carried out through websites, social media and educational workshops.
This project is co-funded by FISU through its support scheme to NUSF projects, introduced this year. By working in close collaboration with public authorities, the main university centres, FISU and other sports stakeholders, SSAM is making an important contribution in favour of women’s empowerment and sport for all.
