PORTO – In the group phase of the men’s competition at the 7th World University Beach Volleyball Championship, GER1, BRA1 and both Polish teams guaranteed the first position in their groups. RUS1 and GER3 also achieved the first place in their group, winning their games against SLO and BRA2. ESP1 and USA, despite being defeated by CZE2 and AUT, kept the leadership in each group.
In the women’s competition, POR1, USA2, GER2, NOR1 and POL1 easily landed on the first place in their groups. On the other hand, POL2 and ESP1 had some difficulties in controlling their own groups, but they finally managed.
Yesterday, 24 July, was not only a competition day, since all participants were also involved in a social programme with a cultural visit around Porto. To start the afternoon, they went on a sightseeing trip through the Foz do Douro and, then, around downtown. The delegations also had the opportunity of to sail the Douro River to visit the 7 bridges connecting the city of Porto to the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. The Social Programme of this WUC ended in The Porto Wine Cellars, one of the greatest symbols of Portuguese culture.
