Maia hosts the Portuguese University Championships

MAIA – Maia, the European City of Sports 2014, will be hosting the Finals of the Portuguese National University Championships (CNU 2014) this year, taking place between 7 and April 12.

The organization was awarded by the Academic Federation of Porto (FAP), which will have as partner the City Council of Maia.

The competition includes the Finals of Basketball, Football, Futsal, Handball, Rugby 7s and Volleyball. The CNUs 2014 will also integrate the competition of Field Hockey and Korfball.

The Final Stages resulted from preliminary rounds in three geographic zones (Lisbon, Porto and National) and to the event will be attended by over 2,000 athletes, during the 6 days of competition.

On 27 March the draw and the public presentation of CNUs 2014 was held in Maia.

The ceremony was presided by the President of FADU, Filipa Godinho, the President of the Academic Federation of Porto, Ruben Alves, also President of the Organizing Committee, and the Councilor for Sports of the City Council, Hernani Ribeiro.

Hernani Ribeiro, in his brief speech, acknowledged that “the work that has been done in the past few years, allows Maia to have good sports facilities.” The City Councilor was full of praise of the city, stating that “one of the biggest facets of Maia is to be an excellent host, always.”

Filipa Godinho recalled that “we are near the most important moment of the university sport season in Portugal”. The President of FADU is confident that “this will be a very fruitful experience for all participants and clubs.”
