PARIS On March 20, coordinated by Mr. YANG Liguo, Secretary-General of China University Sports Federation, and invited by Prof. HAO Ping, President of UNESCO’s 37th General Conference, FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien paid a visit to the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris to have a meeting in the president’s office.

For the development of the international university sports movement, FISU is looking forward to establish the ‘International University Sport Day, student-athletes, and all students from the campus should be associated in the concept and the realisation of the event such as sport activities, artistic and cultural shows, educational challenges and contests.

The International Day of University Sport would inspire today’s student-athletes, who are tomorrow’s leaders, to develop and share with all students the principles of personal integrity, Fair-Play, teamwork and respect for opponents, the universal values which both UNESCO and FISU seek to promote a new, better and successful society, President Gallien commented.

UNESCO was very positive towards FISU’s idea for establishing an ‘International University Sport Day’. “Nowadays, young people get almost all the information from the internet, they chat and play games all the time through smart phones, laptops, tablets. It’s our responsibility to get them back to the real world, invite them to the outdoor playgrounds, push them to join the real people to people exchange. UNESCO will definitely give full support to the creation of the ‘International University Sport Day”, Prof. HAO Ping responded.

After the meeting, Prof. HAO Ping hosted a meeting with Dr. Mohamed Sameh Amr, the chairman of UNESCO’s executive board, to discuss the technical procedures very much in detail. FISU will send an official proposal to UNESCO before the end of March, which will be discussed during the UNESCO executive meeting in April.
