LUBLIN – The best universities, athletes and activists of Polish University Sports Association (AZS) were awarded for their results during the last season.
At the University Sport Gala in Lublin a new year of academic sport has been inaugurated. During the event at the “Globus” hall almost 600 people were present, including: Minister of Sport and Tourism Joanna Mucha; professor Jacek Gulinski from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education; Marshal of the Lubelskie Voivodship Krzysztof Hetman; Vice-President of Lublin Katarzyna Mieczkowska-Czerniak. Hosts of the evening were professors Marek Rocki and Zdzislaw Targonski, both high-officials of AZS. The Gala was also the last part of celebrating the 90th anniversary of AZS in Lublin.
Because of this jubilee many prizes were awarded. Wieslaw Dolinski (athletics) was named ‘Best Coach’ of 90-years AZS in Lublin. The titles of the best athletes went to Arkadiusz Godel (1st in SOG in fencing ’72), Kinga Kolosinska (2nd at the 2013 Summer Universiade in beach volleyball) and Andrzej Sontag (3rd in Europe Championship ’74 in triple jump). Zdzislaw Targonski, chair of AZS in Lublin, was also rewarded by the local authorities.
In the next part of the Gala awards were presented for the latest results. Malogorzata Koldej, who is from this region (rest of Polish medallists from Kazan will be soon rewarded by the President of Poland) received an award for a bronze medal at the Universiade in Kazan. Four AXA scholarships, (AZS partner) were also presented; to Rafal Omelko (athletics), Damian Rosolski (rowing), Tomasz Szczepaniak (judo) and Karolina Sztokfisz (snowboarding).
Local structures of AZS also received their awards. Poznan was distinguished for organizing the EUC rowing and Katowice for the EUC handball. For their brilliant results were rewarded: University of Economy in Bydgoszcz and Poznan University of Life Sciences (both for EUC rowing) and Rzeszow University of Technology (EUC table tennis).
The third part of the Gala started with a video presentation about the Polish University Championships 2012/2013. Later were given rewards for the best colleges. These were: University of Warsaw, AGH University of Science and Technology, Medical University of Lodz, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Jan Amos Komenski University of Applied Sciences in Leszno, The Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice and Kozminski University. The annual Eugeniusz Pietrasiak’s scholarships were given to Joanna Domiza, Michal Filarski, Anna Lipka, Ewa Wituszynska and Ewelina Wrobel.
The most important awards were given in the last part of the Gala. The medal table of Polish University Championships was won by The University School of Physical Education in Krakow, while Szczecin University was 2nd and University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn – 3rd. The best in overall standings was AGH University of Science and Technology, before University of Warsaw and Adam Mickiewicz University.
The last awards were given for the development of academic sport. These were handed to Professor Stanislaw Michalowski, rector of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University.
