Mongolia’s 11th National University Games in Full Swing

ULAANBAATARThis year the Mongolian Student Sports Federation is organising its 11th “National Universiade” The event gathers student-athletes from the 5 regions of the country: capital city, western, eastern, southern and northern regions competing in 15 sports disciplines.

The Organising Committee of the “National Universiade 2013” is chaired by Mrs. Oyungerel Ts., Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism of Mongolia. Vice-chairs of the OC are Mr. Jargalsaikhan D., Director of the Department of Physical Culture and Sport Policy Implementation in Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Mrs. Urgamaltsetseg B., Vice-Minister of Education and Science.

The organising committee also involves representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mongolian National Broadcasting Television, the City Authority for Sports and Physical Culture, the Mongolian Students Union and the Mongolian Student Sports Federation.

So far, four competitions came to an end, i.e. long track speed skating, cross country skiing, volleyball and chess, involving around 480 student-athletes from 21 universities and colleges. The best performing athletes at these national games competitions shall participate this year in the Summer Universiade in Kazan and the Winter Universiade in Trentino.

Long track speed skating athlete Uuganbaatar G, a student of the Mongolian State University of Education has broken the national records in men’s 1,500m and 3,000m, while Delgermaa D., a student of “Etugen” institute broke the national records in the women’s 500m and 3,000m. These two student-athletes will represent Mongolia at the 26th Winter Universiade from 11 to 21 December 2013 in Trentino, Italy.

In the chess competition, 1st place went to IM- Ms. Munguntuul B. and FM- Mr. Munkhgal G., 2nd place to WGM- Ms. Batchimeg T. and GM- Mr. Batchuluun Ts., 3rd place to WFM- Ms. Lkhamsuren D. and MK- Mr. Galmandakh B., and 4th place to WIM- Ms. Yanjindulam D. and GM- Mr. Gundavaa B. These 8 chess players (4 men and 4 women) are selected to participate in the 27th Summer Universiade 2013 to be held in Kazan, Russia from 6-17 July 2013. In the previous Summer Universiade in 2011 in Shenzhen, China, Mongolian chess player International Master Munguntuul B. won a silver medal in the women’s individual event.

Volleyball champions

The Volleyball competitions were held from 4 to 8 March 2013 in the Central Sports Palace in Ulaanbaatar city. More than 300 students of 15 universities with 14 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams participated for the competition from the 5 regions of Mongolia. Mongolian state university of science and technology got the 1st place, while Mongolian state university of agriculture came 2nd.

This week, the basketball tournament is in progress at the Central sports palace and sport hall of the Mongolian state university of science and technology. The best 18 men’s and 16 women’s teams were selected form the 5 regions of Mongolia. So far Khovd University’s teams which is located more than 1,000 km away from the capital is leading the competition. The men’s and women’s basketball teams for Kazan will be selected from the participating teams in this tournament.

Ten remaining sport competitions (sports hiking, woodball, handball, futsal, boxing, judo, wrestling, athletic, table tennis and aerobics) will be organized at the end of March, April and May with the closing ceremony scheduled on 16 May 2013 in the 5,040-seat Buyan-Ukhaa Sports Palace.
