PHILIPPINES – University of Perpetual Help-Las Piñas City’s Marcelo Joaquin Jr. and John Erickson Francisco were nominated the top choices in the men’s division and the University of Santo Tomas (UST). Judy Ann Caballejo and Maruja Banaticla topped the women’s side in the National Students Beach Volleyball Qualifying tournament held in cooperation with the Philippine Schools Volleyball Association (PSVA), an affiliated member of the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP).
According to the PVSB, the top choices in both categories in the National Students Beach Volleyball qualifying competitions will represent the Philippines at the 2nd Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship in Cha-Am, Thailand from November 27-30, 2012.
The top choices coaches are Henry James Pecaña and Emiliano C. Lontoc for University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Michael R. Cariño for the University of Perpetual Help-Las Piñas City.
Meanwhile, the De La Salle University of Dasmariñas City tandem of 2011 Shenzhen Universiade veteran Jennifer Manzano and Cindy Benitez won the final leg of the Petron Beach Volleyball Circuit held in Lingayen, Pangasinan Province over the weekend.
Manzano and Benitez thus earned the right to represent the country in the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia in July 2013.
Prof. Robert Milton Calo, the FESSAP Executive Vice President, will be the Head of Delegation for the Philippine contingent to the 2nd Asian University Championship in Thailand.
Prof. Calo will be assisted by Gerardo Sergio, the athletic director of De La Salle University- Dasmariñas City.
In partnership AgriNurture Inc (ANI), Healthy Options, San Miguel Corporation and Cobra Energy Drink, the FESSAP will send athletes to the FISU events.
The three university teams – UST, Perpetual Help and DLSU-Dasmariñas – will all participate in the 2nd Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship in Thailand.
The 1st Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship was held in Shandong Province, China in July last year with the AgriNurture Inc (ANI)–Philippine team represented by University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) women’s team of Cebu City. The USPF women’s team earned the right after it topped the 1st National Students Beach Volleyball Championship held at the University of the East (UE) beach court in Caloocan City four month earlier.
