SUSF stages National University Sports Conference in St. Gallen

ST GALLEN – The University of St. Gallen hosted the annual National University Sports Conference 2012. Around 40 University sports directors and teachers from almost all the Swiss Universities, Federal Institutes of Technology and Universities of Applied Sciences met for a three days conference, organised by University sports director and FISU Vice-President Leonz Eder and his team. Prof. Dr. Thomas Bieger, President of St. Gallen University, welcomed the participants and underlined the high importance of culture and sport in the life of students. He also stressed the fact that sport is a very important marketing tool for a University. Dr. Ulrike Landfester, professor for German language and literature presented the unique concept of the context studies at St. Gallen University, while Prof. Dr. Christian Fieseler from the Institute for Media and Communications Management explained the role and possibilities of social media in the field of University sport. Specific questions, such as communication, marketing, social media and sport for adults were discussed in workshops.

Roger Roth, President of the Swiss University Sports Conference, welcomed eight new members to the conference, among them Bettina Herzig-Lyner (Basel) and Lorenz Ursprung (Zurich). Marco Obrist, former sports director at Basel University, and Kaspar Egger, former sports director in Zurich, became honorary members of “Swiss University Sport”. Andreas L. Csonka, President of the Swiss University Sports Federation, presented a paper, which should lead to a stronger cooperation with Swiss Olympic. Under the leadership of Markos Michaelides, Geneva, the Technical Commission fixed the dates and places for the Swiss University Championships 2013.

The participants at the conference had also the chance to participate at a kind of learning circuit in the surroundings of St. Gallen city. The farewell dinner was hosted by St. Gallen University in a typical local restaurant. Lausanne will host the next National University Sports Conference in 2013.
