1st East Africa University Female Games successfully held in Uganda

KAMPALA While many other people broke off for the Easter Celebrations, female students and officials from universities in the East African region converged at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda to participate in the 1st Edition of the 1st East Africa University Female Games. The games are aimed at promoting and celebrating women involvement in University Sports (especially those marginalized sports) and commemorating the efforts of the late King MUTEESA I (of the Buganda Kingdom) who, through his leadership invited the British to introduce education inUganda.

The event attracted participants from Kenya and Uganda with a total of 880 participants from 10 Universities. These Included Moi University, Makerere University, Makerere University Business School, Kampala University, Kampala International University, Ndejje University, St Lawrence University, Islamic University In Uganda,U ganda Christian University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

The games were organized, run and officiated by women in a bid to promote more women in all sectors of sports. Athletes competed in Handball, Football, Netball, Tennis and Chess. All officiating officials were women apart from a few delegation officials who were men.

The competition was immense and met the expectations of the organizers owing to the fact that all Universities in East Africa were on Session but still managed to participate in these games.

In his words, the President of the East Africa University Sports Federation, Mr. Cyriaco Kabagambe thanked FISU, through FASU for funding this great dream which had become a reality. He informed his guests (who included representatives from the Buganda Kingdom) that this was just the beginning of a long project until it shall become a great celebration of women in sport in the whole East African region.

At the closing ceremony, where trophies were awarded to the winning teams, the Guest of honor thanked all participants for their great interest in promoting participation of women in sport at all levels. He encouraged universities to give female students more opportunities to participate in sports and also have more women in administrative positions. Ms Ritah Namisaango, the Public relations officer at MakerereUniversitywas chosen for her involvement in University sport. She served as the head of the Marketing Committee on the Local Organizing Committee for the 5th Africa University Games 2008 and also Chaplain of team Uganda at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Serbia.
