Gender Equality Committee meeting at the 2012 FISU Forum


TAIPEI CITY The Gender Equality Committee (GEC) meeting took place on the afternoon prior to the plenary session dedicated to University Sport – a Platform for Change and for Women’s Engagement. The meeting was chaired by FISU Assessor Ms. Rosaura Mendez (Costa Rica).

In attendance were also Mrs. Penninah Kabenge (Vice-Chair, Uganda), Ms. Lilia Barieva (Russia), Ms. Hilkka Laitinen (Finland), Ms. Marisol Pedraza Luevano (Mexico) and Ms. Macide Tuzum (Turkey). The meeting invited Ms. Raija Mattila, IWG Co-Chair, Ms. Verena Burk, FISU EC member and Chair Press Committee and Ms Delise O’Meally (USA) to attend and contribute to the overall works.

The objectives of this committee is to evaluate the situation of and progress made for women, while identifying existing successful programmes to reach gender equality. Looking to stimulate and support the development of effective policies, practice and strategies through new projects, to increase the number of women in leadership positions and, at the same time, to build relationships and networks, providing information about FISU policies and activities. It will work closely with equity partners, decision makers and sports deliverers in order to focus on issues of strategic importance.

The meeting started with a welcome address by the Chair Ms. Mendez, followed by a presentation of the members. The liaison persons, terms of references of the GEC and responsibilities of the members were also discussed in detail. The core activities, such as the “Women’s Award” and a round table between FSI’s and FISU at the Universiade, and also cooperation with CES/CESU for the 2013 Conference and 12th FISU Forum were addressed.

International cooperation and representation was discussed and the cooperation with IWG similarly opened interesting debate with all members in attendance. The address of the IWG Co-Chair, Ms. Mattila was welcomed and led to the information update regarding the Brighton Declaration and FISU signatories.

The meeting closed with final remarks on the FISU magazine and networking opportunities within FISU, as well as the setting of a new meeting date.
