KAMPALA Peninnah Kabenge has bounced back as the NUSFU president after beating UCU’s Vincent Kisenyi by two votes in a tightly contested election at the body’s elective general assembly at Makerere University Council room on Friday afternoon.

Kabenge amassed 30 votes while Kisenyi registered 28 votes of the total number of 58 voters from 22 universities with each expected to have three voters-dean of students, sports tutor and student leader. Some universities were only represented by one person.

“I am happy that the general assembly has entrusted me as the president of NUSFU for the next four years to steer university sport. Such competition is healthy which means that we have to work harder”, said a happy and contented Kabenge after the elections.

Kabenge revealed that the new executive will focus on hosting international events as well as looking at a future where the students play a bigger role in management in university sports.

However, Kisenyi has bounced back as the vice-president of NUSFU for his second term after he was nominated by KIU’s Patrick Ogwel. Ogwel declined the position after he was nominated by Jovia Karwana of International University of EastAfrica.

NkumbaUniversity’s sports tutor Patrick Ssebuliba has retained his position as the NUSFU general secretary after MUBS’ sports tutor Hillary Geoffrey Kimbugwe told the elective general assembly that he had decided to stand down for the good of sport.

NdejjeUniversity’s sport tutor Paul Mark Kayongo also returned to the executive committee as the treasurer unopposed. Kayongo has been the NUSFU treasurer for the last eight years (two terms).

Bishop Stuart, International University of East Africa andKabaleUniversityhave been officially admitted into the NUSFU family.

Meanwhile, the AGM also agreed that the first edition of female inter-university games will be held from April 6-8 at Makerere main grounds.

Aimed at increasing the level of involvement of women in universities, the participating females will compete in five sports, i.e. netball, handball, badminton, chess and football.
