CUSF & EUSA delegates with the Rector of the University of Zagreb
ZAGREB – On the invitation of the Croatian University Sports Association (CUSF), EUSA President Mr Alberto Gualtieri, Vice-President Mr Sinisa Jasnic and Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik visitedZagreb on December 10, 2011 to be present on the CUSF Annual General Assembly. The EUSA representatives were welcomed by the CUSF President Mr Zrinko Custonja, Vice-President Mr Haris Pavletic and Secretary General Mr Ronald Strumberger. Before the Assembly, a meeting was organised at theUniversity ofZagreb with the Rector prof. dr. Aleksa Bjelis.
Mr Gualtieri used this opportunity to thank the University of Zagreb and its Rector for its constant support to the development of University Sport. The University of Zagreb organised in cooperation with CUSF two European Universities Championships in the past and is one of the most successful universities taking part in EUSA events this year.
After the meeting, a special celebration was held to honour the best individuals and teams. In his welcome speech Mr Zrinko Custonja thanked individuals and member organisations in their contributions in development of university sports in the country. He also presented the initiative that Croatia would like to bid for the organisation of the European Universities Games in 2016.
CUSF president then presented the awards. Award for the most successful athlete went to Danijel Mihelic, gold medallist at the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen. The title of most successful team went to the handball teams of the University of Rijeka, where this year’s European Universities Handball Championship took place, and both male and female teams from the same university played in the finals of the championship. The annual award for fair play was attributed to the Chess team of the University of Zadar because the team independently managed to achieve exceptional sport results thanks to their dedication and initiative.
A special recognition for lifetime achievement was also awarded at the ceremony. The award was given to prof. Alojzije Luski. Mr Luski was a participant in two World Handball Championships and the Olympic Games inRomein 1960 and has been active also in skiing and swimming. From 1964 until retirement he worked as a teacher of physical education at the University of Zagreb.
In the afternoon, the General Assembly was held. It was opened by CUSF President Mr Custonja, who welcomed all the members and invited guests. Beside EUSA delegates, also the representatives of the National Universities Sports Associations from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland and Slovenia were present. The Assembly continued with the presentations of the annual reports and activity plan for 2012 and concluded with approval of application of new member federations in CUSF.
