BRASILIA – The Minister of Sport, Aldo Rebelo, and the governor of the Federal District, Agnelo Queiroz, received the FISU Evaluation Committee on November 4th, on the second day of the technical visit to the city, candidate to host the 2017 Sumer Universiade.
FISU delegates Hisato Igarashi, Marian and Marc Dymalski Vandenplas met with governor Agnelo Queiroz who stressed the importance of the event to the capital and its residents. “Brasília is excited and hopeful to receive the Universiade. We know we have a number of major sports events inBrazilin the coming years, but the Universiade will be held here in our capital and will leave a legacy and respond to aspirations of the city and its residents”, said Agnelo.
The governor highlighted the investments in the works of the National Stadium, hotels, airport and urban mobility that will be made to the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 FIFA World Cup and will be ready for use for the 2017 Universiade.
Another highlight is the projects to revitalize the Ayrton Senna Complex and the Olympic Center of the University of Brasilia(UnB). “We already have a plan to refurbish the Ayrton Senna Complex that will be accelerated and intensified by the government with the Universiade. The Olympic Center of UnB, old dream of the institution and the city, is effective and consolidated thanks to the support of the federal government through the Ministries of Education and Sports. And these are spaces for sports in the original plan of the city and need to be filled, hence the importance of this application to the city. We have a specific plan for the Universiade, which is distinct from the efforts to the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics”, said Agnelo.
Hisato Igarashi thanked the governor for the welcome and stressed the importance of the Universiade legacy for young Brazilians. “The Universiade is an event that inspires and motivates young people to overcome their limits. And that requires attention”, he said. Agnelo reinforced the human legacy of the Universiade in Brazil. “The Universiade will change the history of college sports in the country, making schools and universities places to form athletes and attract young people to the sport. This is the big jump and legacy ofBrasilia’s application”, he added.
After meeting with the governor, the FISU delegation was received by the Minister of Sports, Aldo Rebelo. In the office, overlooking the Cathedral of Brasilia, Marian Dymalski highlighted the happiness to know the building, a symbol of the capital and of Brasilia 2017 application. “I learned about the Cathedral in the books when I was in high school being it a symbol of modern architecture and now I have the opportunity to see it up and close”, he said.
Aldo Rebelo reinforced the modern spirit of Brasilia, designed and built to be the capital of the country. “Brasília is a symbol of modernity not only for Brazil but to the world. And the will to receive the Universiade is entered in the spirit of modernity and youth and, therefore, we strengthen the commitment of the federal government and its ministries, together with the government in Brasilia, to host and conduct the 2017 Universiade “, Aldo said.
To the minister, the Universiade is an opportunity to reassess college sports in the country. “I was a student leader and I am an enthusiast regarding the importance of sport for young people. To this end the Ministry of Sport and the government of Brazil provide to FISU the guarantees to promote the 2017 Summer Universiade”.
Hisato congratulated the Brazilians that can count with a Ministry of Sports, which reinforces the passion and the importance of sport in the country. Marc Vandenplas stressed the importance of the survey and the meetings between members of FISU and national authorities to observe the continuity and unity of the Brasilia 2017 application.
Luciano Cabral, president of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU), closed the meeting by thanking Minister Aldo Rebelo and the commitment of the Ministry of Sports with the flag of university sports.
Continuing with the inspection schedule, Hisato, Marian and Marc did a helicopter flight over Brasilia and visited sports facilities provided in the application dossier. The FISU officials visited the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center, the pools of Ayrton Senna Complex and Nilson Nelson gymnasium.
