WARSAW – For the third year in row the University of Warsaw won the general classification in the Polish University Championships.
On the 20th of October the Polish University Sport Association (AZS) hosted its university sport gala in the Warsaw Capitol Theater. The representatives of Polish academic sport came together, to sum up the students competition in 30 disciplines held within the framework of Polish University Championships. During the academic year 2010/2011 thousands of students from 201 universities competed in team sports, snowboard, alpine skiing, judo, cross country, weightlifting, rowing, horse riding, tennis, mountaineering, swimming and many other disciplines.
Second in the general classification was Adam Mickiewicz University from Poznan, third was Warsaw University of Technology.
The gala hosts awarded also universities in the medal classification (winner Academy of Physical Education in Katowice) as well as in type of university classification: universities, universities of technology, academies of physical education, non-public universities, schools of vocational education, medical universities, social and natural science universities.
All winners were awarded by representatives of the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, members of parliament, universities and AZS as well as legendary athlete and Olympic medallist Irena Szewinska who were present at the ceremony.
The gala hosts honored also people who work for the benefit of university sport in Poland, taking care of its development. Medallists of this year’s Winter and Summer Universiades were awarded with diplomas and souvenirs. Representatives of government and ministries received many thanks for supporting academic sport.
In a special way authorities of AZS wanted to thanks members of AZS who promote ideas of the Association and university sport. They were honored with the Pietrasik Scholarship and the Piasecki Award as well as the distinction for the best organizer of AZS events, the best journalist of University Sport Review and the best investment.
