CIS Celebrates 50th Anniversary

14 September 2011

OTTAWA Canadian FISU Member Association CIS celebrates its 50th Anniversary. As part of the CIS 50th Anniversary Celebration, CIS is launching the CIS 50th Anniversary Success Stories series. Throughout the season, each week CIS will be profiling two alumni from CIS member institutions who have made outstanding contributions to sports, business, politics, or in the community. Full profiles are available online in both English and French, with brief previews provided below.

Cheryl Pounder

From Golden Hawk to Golden Olympian Cheryl Pounder developed her skills at Laurier before excelling on hockey’s biggest stage.

Cheryl Pounder is a firm believer of passing the torch from one generation to another.

The two-time women’s hockey Olympic gold-medallist and Wilfrid Laurier graduate is all about soaking up memories, sharing her experiences with others, and moving forward.

“I’m a firm believer that the journey is what it’s all about,” said the ex-Team Canada defense.

Not surprising, since Pounder’s journey has taken her everywhere from hockey-madMontreal(her birthplace) toMississauga, where she first laced them up, toWaterloowhere she developed into the leader she is today, and beyond.

So Waterloo Lutheran University’s star athlete, more than apt at track and field, hockey, basketball and football, checked his instinctual compass and chose.

On this day in the mid-60’s, destiny was in Heinbecker’s mailbox, and it took the form of two letters.
