FISU Executive Committee Meeting in Shenzhen

SHENZHEN – Today, August 7th, theFISU Executive Committee met at the Wu Zhou Guest House, the official Hotel for the FISU Family at the Shenzhen Universiade.

After the welcome word of the Vice-Mayor of Shenzhen, Mr. Zhang Weng, FISU President George E. Killian opened the EC meeting.

After approval of the agenda and the reports of the President, Secretary-General and Treasurer the first progress report on the upcoming Universiade was presented by Marc Vandenplas, Director of the Summer Universiade who gave an overall situation outline.

Next, Mr. Stavros Douvis, FISU Assessor and CTI Chair presented his report on the sports and venues.

Dr. Larry Rink, Chair of the FISU Medical Committee gave an overview of the medical facilities for the Games which are outstanding. Dr. Rink warned for the heath which might cause problems for the sport performances and the Medical team will closely monitor the temperatures and the weather conditions.

Omar Al Hai, Chair of the FISU International Control Committee (CIC), spoke next. So far 18 countries were accredited and accreditation is running smoothly.

Leonz Eder and Verena Burk, Chair and Vice-Chair of the FISU International Press Committee gave an update of the Young Reporters’ Seminar during the Universiade.

Assessors Ralethe Malumbete and Pedro Dias gave an update on the protocol issues at the Opening Ceremony and medal ceremonies.

Then the floor was given to the Shenzhen Organizing Committee which gave its 10th and last progress report before the start of the Games. Mr. Huang Guoqiang, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shenzhen Municipal Government gave a last update of the OC’s preparations for the Games. For the Universiade Shenzhen has put in place a series of modern sports venues, like the ‘Spring Cocoon’. The construction of all Universiade venues were officially completed early July and all temporary facilities were completed at the end of July. In total 70 hours of training sessions were organized to train the senior venue staff involving 270 people. 43 sessions of training key staff of the 27 departments of all venues have been carried out as well. These sessions involved 4,816 persons and lasted some 390 hours. All competition equipment has been put in place. A variety of performances and exhibitions will be held in the UniversiadeVillage. Exhibits in the 1,500 m² Cultural Experience Zone include a photography exhibit, a traditional Chinese culture show, oil painting and graphic arts exhibit, Chinese wash painting exhibit and a Chinese ‘Scholars’ Stones’ exhibit.

FISUSG/CEO Eric Saintrond also informed the EC on the upcoming General Assembly.

Stefan Bergh, CDSU Chair gave an update on the activities of the Continental Federations. A proposed research project from ODUPA was approved by the EC. 10 countries have applied for FISU affiliation and 1 for re-affiliation, which will be addressed during the General Assembly.

 

Mr. Korkmaz presents the Official Erzurum Report to the FISU President and SG/CEO

 

A delegation of the Organizing Committee of the 2011 Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey, headed by the General Coordinator of the 25th WU Bekir Korkmaz presented the final report of the Games. Mr. Korkmaz presented theFISU President and SG/CEO with the Official Report Book of the Erzurum Universiade. Mr. Killian once again thanked the Erzurum General Coordinator for a magnificent Universiade.

President Killian concluded the current board’s (2007-2011) last EC meeting by thanking all the EC members for serving their four years on the board of FISUand dedicating their time to the development of international university sport. At the upcoming General Assembly (August 9th-10th), a new board will be elected for the period 2011-2015.
