Brazilian University Sports League ended First Regionals

NATAL Teams from five states celebrated gold medals in finals of the Brazilian University Sports League 2011, sectional North and Northeast, in the city of Natal, from June 6th to 10th. The decisive matches of the futsal, handball, volleyball and basketball tournaments (male and female) landed the champions and runners-up a ticket to the national stage of the Brazilian University Sports, in Brasilia (DF), next September.

Teams ofRio Grandedo Norte won the title in female futsal and basketball. The FMN team fromNatalbeat FMN from Pernambuco in futsal 2:1. In the basketball tournament, the athletes of FMN fromNatalbeat FMN from Alagoas for 63:50.

Bahiacelebrated the title of the male basketball tournament. FTC team marked a 80:70 victory against Esamaz, from Pará, and was number one for the second year in Brazilian University Sports League.

Ceara secured victories in the women’s volleyball and men’s basketball events. Unifor girls scored 3 sets to 0 against Facex, fromNatal, totaled eight points in the group and ensured the title of the North and Northeast League. In men’s soccer, Unifor, from Ceara, beat Ceap team, from Amapá, on penalties after a 3:3 tie.

Pernambuco also took gold medals in the Brazilian University Sports League. FMN from Pernambuco beat the UFRN team, fromNatal, 32:31 and won the men’s handball tournament. In the men’s volleyball final, FMN faced UniNiltonLins, from Amazonas, and won 3:1.

The sectional north and northeast of the Brazilian University Sports League 2011 attracted more than 800 athletes from twelve states for five days of competition in Natal. The team champions and runners-up are move up to the national round of the League, in Brasilia, from September 18th to 25th.

“Besides the increase in the number of athletes we also noted the increase in technical level of the matches. What means more interest and participation of universities in the tournament”, said Luciano Cabral, President of Brazilian University Sport Confederation (CBDU).

Next week, from June 20th to 26th, it´s time for South, Southeast and Midwest Regionals of Brazilian University League in the city ofVitória.
