Medical Committee Meets in London

23 October 2010

LONDON – The FISU Medical Committee members who had been forced to cancel their meeting last April due to the Icelandic volcano ash have finally succeeded to gather in Ware (near London) on October 22nd and 23rd, 2010, for a very constructive two-day session.

On Friday morning, the group was warmly welcomed by CM Member Dr. Thomas Crisp. The Chair of the Medical Committee, Dr. Lawrence Rink asked Secretary-General/CEO Eric Saintrond, to make a small introduction before officially opening the meeting and going over the different points on the agenda.

He explained that the goals were to review FISU current regulations for medical care and anti-doping regulations. The aim was also to develop FISU minimum requirements and best practices for medical care, doping control, catering and hygiene for local organizing committees to host Universiades and World University Championships.

The working session debuted with a presentation made by the Director WUC Laurent Briel, in which he explained the successes and difficulties linked to the preparation and running of medical care and anti-doping aspects at the twenty-five (25) championships that have been organized so far this year. Two are still under way: wrestling and equestrian. The Chair then asked the members for their input and quickly reviewed the situation championship by championship.

CM Vice-Chair Dusan Hamar then took the floor to give an updated report on his last visit to Erzurum (TUR) and proceeded to the nomination of the Medical Committee members to the 2011 Erzurum Winter Universiade.

Dr. Rink reviewed the medical and anti-doping statistics of the 2009 Belgrade Summer Universiade and gave a very comprehensive report on the preparation of the 2011 Shenzhen Summer Universiade. He informed that he was counting on the presence of all the Medical Committee members in Shenzhen to cover the twenty-four sports in the program.

The second part of the morning session was dedicated to WADA. The group discussed the use of ADAMS and clarified the procedures relating to the deliverance of TUES at Universiades and Championships. The CM also discussed the new educational program that WADA would like to develop with FISU. With this pilot project, WADA is looking at introducing anti-doping content in University programs in the areas related to sport such as physical education, medicine, law and sport management.

In the afternoon, a brief presentation was made by Guy Taylor, Director for TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) who made a presentation on the TASS program. The committee was then divided into four breakout sessions (Winter Universiade, Summer Universiade, World University Championships and TUE) and focused on creating and modifying FISU regulations and minimum requirements for the various events.

On October 23, the documents developed from the previous day were presented by the different groups to the entire committee. The changes were discussed and approved.

The CM Chair later stressed the importance of establishing a close cooperation with WADA, IOC, and all of the international sports federations concerned by our program as well as other medical organizations. He also added the need for FISU to continue to engage in new projects such as educational programs, scientific conferences, publications, etc. The meeting revealed to be a very fruitful one and concluded with a dinner hosted by the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) in London to which EC member, Alison Odell, FISU Executive Committee member; Karen Rothery, BUCS CEO, and Neil Rogers BUCS Head of International Programmes also participated.
