Steering Committee in Lausanne – Day 1

14 October 2010

IOC Director-General Lacotte with FISU President Killian

LAUSANNE – From October 15th to 16th, the FISU Steering Committee meets in Lausanne to prepare the Executive Committee meeting which is scheduled for November 17th to 19th in Brussels.

Today’s meeting took place in the Headquarters of the International Olympic Committee and it was IOC Director-General Urs Lacotte who welcomed the members of the Steering Committee present, i.e. President Killian, 1st Vice-President Gallien, Vice-Presidents Bergh, Cabral and Zhang, Treasurer Danzandorj, 1st Assessor Ralethe and Secretary-General/CEO Saintrond. Mr. Hybl, Chair of the Legal Committee also attended the meeting.

‘It’s a pleasure to have FISU here’, Mr. Lacotte welcomed the FISU delegates. ‘It is in the interest of sport to have as many ISFs as possible based here in Lausanne.’ The IOC Director-General applauded the opening of a FISU office in Lausanne. He welcomed everyone and asked them to feel at home. ‘It was a very wise decision to open an office in the MSI. FISU has now become a part of this international sport network as we have more than 50 sports organizations in the greater Lausanne area. I think that FISU has an important role to play in this network: addressing the future elite, who will take up key positions in our society, through an attractive Universiade, motivating students to pursue education and a sports career at the same time’, Mr. Lacotte said while he wished the FISU delegates a fruitful meeting.

FISU President Killian thanked the IOC Director-General for his hospitality. ‘We are happy to be here in Lausanne, in conjunction to what the IOC does. I hope that our relationship continues to grow, as we are not in competition, as FISU is just an extension of your overall program’, Mr. Killian said referring to the gap FISU fills between the YOG and the Olympic Games, while focusing on student-athletes who might become future Olympians.

After the welcome of Mr. Lacotte, the Steering Committee members proceeded with the agenda of the meeting.

The first day of the meeting ended with an invitation by the city of Lausanne to the city hall.
