
Today, October 20th, 2009 a delegation of the Norges Studentidrettsforbund, the Norwegian member association of FISU, visited the FISU Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
Vice President Karl Olav Haaland and Secretary-General Marius H. Johannessen from the Norwegian Association of University Sport met with FISU Secretary-General/CEO Eric Saintrond, Director of WUC Laurent Briel, Director of WU Milan Augustin and Media Representative Christian Pierre to inform the FISU delegates of the recent changes and future plans within the Norwegian FISU member association.
The Norwegian NUSF boasts 27,000 members from 60 university sports clubs whereas more than half come from the club in Trondheim, the biggest in the country. Today the NUSF stages national championships in 15 sports and in 2010 the Association is planning its first ‘National Student Games’. Its next step in promoting university sports will be staging a World University Championship in the near future as the last event the Norwegians organized was the 1998 WUC Orienteering in Trondheim, an event they also staged in 1988.
The visit of the Norwegians fitted with the renewed international activities of the Association, taking part in EUSA and FISU events again with a silver medal in men’s curling a the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin and a team participating at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade.
