Hi-Tech Flame will illuminate Trentino WU

Multisports 24 September 2013

TRENTINO – Brussels, Paris, Lausanne, Rome, Milan, Pisa and Venice: these are some of the cities on the international tour of Trentino Winter Universiade 2013’s torch relay. The torch was designed by the University of Trento’s Industrial Engineering Department and will symbolise the mix of sport, research and technological innovation characterising the 26th Winter Universiade and its slogan “Inspired by You”.

Trentino WU 2013 aims at being an innovative and cutting edge technology event. Its torch, symbol of sharing and friendship of this international sport event was designed thanks to one of the research projects submitted within the call dedicated to the Universiade. It was carried out by a group of researchers coordinated by Stefano Rossi, professor at the University of Trento’s Industrial Engineering Department. Following the tradition of the Universiade’s previous editions, the cauldron with the Universiade flame will be well visible from miles around, under any weather condition. It will have an ergonomic shape and will be customised with the Universiade’s colours: blue and green. It will take inspiration from some main topics of this event: culture and sport, scientific research, the attention to youth.

In view of the Trentino WU, the torch relay will make an international journey stopping also in Italy’s main university cities before reaching Trento for the lighting of the Universiade flame during the Opening Ceremony.

The torch relay will start from Brussels, where it will visit several European institutions seats and FIDSU’s headquarters; Paris, on the occasion of the first World University Games of Paris’ anniversary (1923) and Lausanne (FISU’s headquarters) and then Italy. The first Italian stop is Turin (host city of the 1st Summer Universiade in 1959 and the 23rd Winter Universiade in 2007). Afterwards, the torch will head to the Brenner area visiting Innsbruck, Bolzano and Trento, the three university cities recently united by new cooperation projects in the field of research and didactics. Then the torch will head to some cities symbolising Italian cultural heritage as Pisa, Milan and Venice. Afterwards the relay will return to Trento to inaugurate the 26th Winter Universiade, the 10th Universiade hosted in Italy.
