FISU joins ARISF on Final Day of SportAccord Meetings

AARHUS - On 7 April, the SportAccord General Assembly, which ended the 6-day summit of sporting world leaders in the Danish city of Aarhus, put forward a number of important decisions which will shape the professional sports community for the coming years. From a symbolic point of view, SportAccord President, Patrick Baumann, proposed to go back to the roots of the organisation by returning to the historic acronym of GAISF (now Global Association of International Sports Federation).

However, for FISU, a SportAccord founding member since 1967, more important was the decision to join the member list of the Association of IOC-recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF). Today, SportAccord (GAISF) has four stakeholders with the status of full member: ASOIF (Association of Summer Olympic International Federations), AIOWF (Association of the International Olympic Winter Sports Federations), ARISF (Association of IOC Recognised International Sport Federations) and AIMS (Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport).

Until now, FISU was recognised as an Associate Member of SportAccord (the only one with voting rights) and is recognised by the IOC since 1961 as a Multi-Sports Event Organisation.

By moving to another status of recognition, becoming a full member of SportAccord and joining ARISF last week, FISU is now considered being more than a sport event organiser: an International Federation representing its 170 National Federations and having a permanent activity within the world of Sport and the Olympic movement.

Reporting to the delegates, SportAccord Convention Managing Director, Nis Hatt, shared some statistics of the 2017 event. It brought together 1,600 delegates in total, representing 71 nations and 740 organisations. More than 100 International Federations and Associate members were present in Aarhus during the first week of April.

As it had already been announced, the 2018 SportAccord Convention will take place in Bangkok, Thailand.
