Universiade Flame

The Universiade Torch Relay is the ceremonial prelude to the upcoming Winter Universiade in the heart of Siberia -- and is sure to be among the most spectacular and large-scale events held in the lead-up to the world's premiere winter university sports event.

The ignition of the FISU Flame begins on the University of Turin campus in Torino, Italy — the birthplace of the modern Universiade — and travels to previous WInter Universiade host cities before beginning the domestic part of the torch relay. Following the international part of the torch relay, the national route weaves its way across Russia visiting 30 cities chosen for their renowned universities and large economic, sporting and cultural significance.

To light the flame of thousands of hearts is a notable team effort; 665 flame bearers are carrying the fire for 164 days through four countries to bring the Universiade spirit from its sporting roots to its future. All told, Torchbearers will carry the flame all the way from Torino to Krasnoyarsk, lighting the Universiade Cauldon as the capstone to what is sure to be a stunning opening ceremony along the banks of the mighty Yenisei River.

“Symbolising unity and friendship among students all over the world, the Universiade Flame is a great reminder of how far the university sports movement has already travelled, and also provokes thought about the distance we have yet to go," FISU President Oleg Matytsin said. "Just as student populations are regularly renewed, we start the Universiade Flame journey again, knowing that our mission of positively influencing the leaders of tomorrow.”

Follow the Universiade Torch Relay as its carried from city to ski hill, a passing reminder to the power of sport for society and citizens alike.
