20th WUC Orienteering 2016 – A swedish final day

Championships 8 August 2016

MISKOLC – Since the beginning of the 20th World University Orienteering Championship, Sweden was regularly favourite for the events held in the Hungarian forest, and on this closing day, this reputation was proved as deserved.

In the men’s competition, Andersson, Sjöberg and Runesson, all medallist in the individual event won the men’s relay with not far from 3 minutes difference on the Swiss team. Meier, Hägler and Schneider concluded their WUC with an additional medal for Switzerland while Finland (Simosas, Heinaro and Siren) grabbed the bronze medal, first one for the Finnish males.

In the women’s competition, here again, no major surprise. Tjernlund, Karlsson and Forsgren (SWE) took the gold medal one minute ahead of a Czech team including Indrakova, Knapova but especially Kosova who won her fourth medal in five races. Behind those two teams, the battle for bronze saw Norway (Alexandersen, Benjaminsen and Myhre) beat Russia and Great Britain in a final sprint.

The event was then concluded by the closing ceremony attended by the deputy minister of sport of Hungary and followed by a race of the team and competition officials. The next WUC Orienteering will be held in Kuortane in Finland from July 17th to 21st, 2018.
