Stunning turnaround from Germany's Elena Brugger

Japanese women continue strong show

GOIANIA — The third day of the World University Wrestling Championship in Brazil saw the female wrestlers get on the podium for the first time. As seven category finals were decided, the highlight of the day was arguably was Elena Brugger. The German wrestler was losing her -55 kg final to Japan's Momoka Kadoya, but with dramatic effort she managed to reverse the momentum and ended up winning the gold medal.

Later, Brugger said she knew it would be a difficult fight, but didn’t allow herself to give up. “I knew my Japanese opponent was very strong even though I never fought against her, but it’s in my spirit to not give up until the last second. I didn’t lose faith that I could win. It’s my first international competition and I’m very happy to bring home the gold medal,” she said.

Other highlighted results from the day were the women’s -62 kg final where Japan once again took silver, Honoka Imagawa losing to Canada’s Linda Morais. In the -72 kg category however, Japan managed to win gold with a strong performance from Mei Shindo. You can check out all the other results here.
